The Lower Pottsgrove Historical Society was founded on September 10, 1985, by a dedicated group of community members who shared a common vision—to preserve the history, heritage, and stories of Lower Pottsgrove Township for future generations. From the beginning, the Society has worked to collect and safeguard photographs, documents, artifacts, and local memorabilia while promoting an appreciation for the people, places, and events that shaped our community.
Our home is the historic Sanatoga Union Sunday School Chapel, a landmark that has stood at the heart of the community since 1891. Built through the determination and generosity of local residents, the chapel became a reality through donated land, volunteer labor, and community fundraising. Every stone, brick, and beam reflects the dedication of those who believed in creating a place for worship, learning, and fellowship.
In 1991, one hundred years after the chapel first opened its doors, the Lower Pottsgrove Historical Society acquired the deed to the building and began the ongoing work of restoring and preserving this treasured landmark. Today, the Sanatoga Chapel serves not only as the Society’s headquarters but also as a museum where visitors can explore the rich history of Lower Pottsgrove Township through exhibits, artifacts, photographs, and archival collections.
Over the years, the Society has assembled an extensive collection documenting life in Lower Pottsgrove, including materials related to local schools, Sanatoga Park, Sanatoga Speedway, Ringing Rocks Park, businesses, community organizations, and generations of local families. These collections preserve the stories that define our community and provide valuable resources for researchers, students, and anyone interested in our local heritage.
Today, the Lower Pottsgrove Historical Society continues its mission through museum exhibits, educational programs, community events, research assistance, and the ongoing preservation of the historic Sanatoga Chapel. As we look to the future, we remain committed to honoring the past, celebrating our shared heritage, and ensuring that the stories of Lower Pottsgrove continue to inspire generations to come.
